Each year, as Lunar New Year approaches, artists and volunteers stealthily scatter hundreds of handcrafted glass orbs, affectionately known as "Monkeyshines," throughout Tacoma's parks, streets, and public spaces.   These gorgeous handblown glass orbs are stamped with the corresponding Zodiac animal for the year, with 2024 being the Year of the Dragon!   Joining in the fun, local "rogue" artisans add and hide their own contributions in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colors, ranging from miniature paintings to whimsical figurines and everything in between.

As word spreads about the annual event, eager treasure seekers of all ages eagerly scour the city, armed with maps, clues, and a sense of adventure.  The date is not announced ahead of time, they just suddenly start appearing in the crooks of trees, along the base of utility poles, behind benches and walls in parks, in doorways of businesses, or tucked away in blueberry bushes to be discovered much later in the year.  The anticipation is so thick in the city right now because we know it's almost here!!!

What makes Monkeyshines truly special, however, is its emphasis on community and inclusivity. Whether you're a seasoned treasure hunter or a first-time participant, everyone is welcome to join in the fun. The event's organizers encourage creativity, kindness, and respect for both the treasures and the environment, fostering a sense of camaraderie and goodwill among participants.  The agreement is you may keep one intricate glass orb per person.  If you are lucky enough to find more than one - leave some for others to experience the joy and excitement of finding for your fellow neighbors.  Rogue art you can keep what brings you joy, or rehide for someone else to find!

As you embark on your Monkeyshines adventure, keep your eyes peeled for treasures hidden in plain sight—nestled among branches, tucked beneath benches, or perched atop sculptures. And remember, the joy of Monkeyshines isn't just in finding treasures—it's in sharing the experience with others, whether by gifting a treasure to a stranger or swapping stories with fellow hunters.  Be kind to

The origin of Monkeyshines can be traced back to Tacoma, Washington, in the early 2000s. Led by the mysterious Ms. Monkey, the tradition began as a grassroots art project initiated by local artists and community members as a way to infuse creativity and whimsy into the city during the dark and rainy winter months.

As word of the event spread and more people became involved, Monkeyshines evolved into a beloved annual tradition that not only celebrates art but also fosters a sense of community, adventure, and joy. Today, Monkeyshines continues to delight residents and visitors alike, embodying the spirit of creativity, generosity, and connection that defines Tacoma's vibrant arts scene.Join the hunt, spread some joy, and become part of Tacoma's cherished tradition of Monkeyshines. After all, in a world that could use a little more magic, Monkeyshines is a shining beacon of creativity, community, and wonder.

Happy hunting!

PS: One glass orb per person. Leave some fun for your fellow neighbor!
